I reply: Hey I used to live in Ormond with the cool 4th years, and I kinda have no friends now so I want to join this cool little club. Don't judge me.
Anyways, hello all! I hope you're all doing very well and to those who don't know me, I'm an ex-Ormondian ('07) and I thought I'd share a funny little story with you guys. Hope everyone had a fabulous Christmas (except Roland...I'm sorry...but I hope you keep this Christmas in your memory forever because you're never going to experience another one like that in your lifetime. Unless you decide to move to India, which we don't want you to)!
I don't know about you guys, but I LOVE roadtrips. Ever since I was a little girl my parents would shove us in the car and drive for hours interstate in Malaysia and we'd also cross over the border to South Thailand and Singapore. Sitting long hours in the car has become like second nature to me, as long as I'm not the one driving. Last week, mum had the craziest idea of driving from Melbourne to Adelaide and we thought it'd be a fantastic way to go visit a cousin who had just migrated over there.
Mum: "OMG let's drive to Adelaide to see your cousin, it'll be like old times, family roadtrips!"
Me: "OK so it'll roughly take 8-9 hours there. Easy."
Mum: "But since the Great Ocean Road is in the same direction why don't we go via that road on the way to Adelaide? Your aunt said it only took them an extra hour by that road."
Me: *WTF*
Disagreement ensued as we argued how it was impossible to do GOR while on the way to Adelaide, but she won.
So we set off at 1pm, set the GPS for GOR and got there around 4pm.
Sunrise at Marengo
Loch Ard Gorge
Sunset at the Twelve Apostles
OK, so these pics weren't taken on the day of the trip but are from a recent trip to GOR in August. Close enough!
So once we got the sightseeing done, we reset the GPS for Adelaide from Port Campbell at 5pm, and lo and behold...
Estimated Arrival Time: 3:45am
OK I know you may think: Gosh Wenny why didn't you plan out your trip properly beforehand? Why did you start driving at 1pm? Why did you have to stop and take touristy photos when you're rushing for time? BECAUSE THE CHINS DON'T STICK TO THE PLAN, WE ROLL ALONG. (Actually, we're spontaneous.)
Dad then decides to start speeding to make up for time and as I drowzily awoke from my nap I overheard them discussing how sturdy the rented car was.
Dad: "Wow this car is amazing, the road handling is incredible."
Mum: "Really?"
Dad: "Yeah, look! I'm up to 180km/h!"
Me: *WTF is that in the horizon.....blue and red lights...???* "SHIT IT'S THE POLICE SLOW DOWN DAD!"
Yeah....dad got a speeding ticket. His excuse? "Ahh, Sir I'm looking for the nearest toilet my daughter is sick." Cop had no empathy at all. Considering we were in the middle of nowhere I guess it made his day by fining us.
Anyways the next 5 hours passed by pretty slowly (100km/h) and by 10pm we FINALLY got to the SA border. We passed by an interesting sign:
To which we stopped at the quarantine bin to chuck out our fruit in fear of being arrested by border patrol.
QUARANTINE BIN!!!!! (in the middle of nowhere)
We then decided it was the best time to respond to mother nature as it looked like we weren't going to be anywhere near civilisation soon. So yes, I peed on the roadside. Left my mark on the border of SA and VIC. How many of you have done that?! *smirk*
(On a sidenote, Roland and Tan have so kindly told me of this revolutionary product called the She-Pee. Boys, why didn't I get this as a birthday present then? Would've saved me so much trouble.)
The rest of the journey to Adelaide was uneventful as we were pretty drained by the long journey, and we got to our cousin's house at 2am. We stayed in Adelaide for two nights and drove back on the third day using the fastest route this time (triple checked to make sure). Indeed it took us 8.5 hours. I suppose it made for a very memorable roadtrip but never again will I want to sit in a car for longer than 13 hours. Granted, I have done KL-Hatyai (South Thailand)-KL in 24 hours but that's different because we were on a serious mission to eat.
Anyways, that's all from me! I hope you guys have a wonderful New Years!
x Wenny
Wenny who? Oh the 1st Malaysian girl I met in college (together with Wongsy and Renata, i think). She stayed in Allan House btw G.01 (ext 1200). Also, she used to star in the Ormond Choir, now more like guest starring right?
ReplyDeleteAnyway... you like road trips? you should try driving and see if you still like it :P
SHE-PEE!!!!
Hoi! I was a member of the choir from 2007-2010. That's dedication for you! And I still like roadtrips, but I haven't driven for longer than 2 hours on a roadtrip yet hurhur. Any takers for a roadtrip during Summer?!?!?
